Just an observation or three to share...

Just a quick note to inform you of two unusual encounters over the weekend.

1) I went for a bite to eat in a local eaterie and ordered a salad, amongst other delights. The contents of the salad were thus: sliced cabbage, ham, tomatoe, japanese veg (the name of which escapes me, quite nice though) and...CORNFLAKES!! I shit you not. Mr. Kellogg's best. The strange thing was, it was damn good.

2) Whilst "enjoying" a nicotinic-cancer igniter by Phillip Morris outside my front door this evening, I saw an old lady walk her dog (the kind of genetic mistake that one feels like stepping on so that it can't pass on it's genes...Mrs. Osbourne, aka Ozzy's wife, has one) who, as god intended, needed to expel it's digestive excrement. It wasn't the fact that the dog deposited it's load into a carefully positioned plasitc bag that was alarming. It was the fact that Granny pulled out, from her handbag, a wad of tissue and wiped the dog's ass. I kid you not.

3) Went birding this morning with Neil near Kyoto and it reminded me of birding at home with Jim many moons ago when we used to walk for hours and bird away. Today, we walked the river banks and paddy fields of Yawatashi and Ogura for 5 hours in the showers and cold (winter is coming). Saw an incredible 6 species of bird of prey (Peregrine, Buzzard, Kestrel, Black Kite, Osprey and Goshawk) and a Long-eared Owl. Northern lapwings have started to arrive and the wind has a bite now. A good day's birding and plenty of fresh air. The 6.30am alarm was not pleasant mind...especially of a Sunday! However, there were no complaints to be heard...

Ok, later skaters.

ps: this week I have mostly been eating karage.

Andre, good to hear from ya mate. If you can drag that gombeen off Cape you'd be doing well. He seems to have found himself settled there. Ah well, no better man to live there I guess. Get saving and come on over and we'll go birding and drinking. Not much else happening here, just about to make me lunch (still eating salads fella) and go to bed. I'll be in touch soon. Say Hi to Lorraine for me

Spring has hit New Zealand like a mules kick in the bollocks. The hills are green, the sky blue, and my tan...well,lets not get into it.Fully charged up after a long weekend (labour day, whatever that is) of blissful sunshine, girls in bikinis, and beautiful 5 - 8 foot peeling walls of liquid perfection.Nothing quite like the solitude of 90 mile beach.Apart from the tour buses full of Japanese tourists driving up and down the sand dunes, beeping encouragement at the unimpressed surfers. In NZ birding news,i also saw my first kiwi !! Very happy as it didnt seem too bothered by us,or anything else .Damned right too...

LONG MAY YOU EAT YOUR GARAGE !!!!!

As regards the ads in the Pink pages...you used to leave it in the back of your car so I used it as a blanket on our trips away!!

Pee, email will be on the way asap with phone number!!

H, god knows when that langer will get off Cape, probably never I'd say.

Cilla babes, enjoy da jazz...be careful of flying 8-balls!! Mind yourself and say hi to all that know me. Will call you when you get back next week.

Whats the point of driving at break neck speed to twitch Radde's warbler, getting it over Homo capensis (cronin) when he can just stumble out of the obs, probably still half sauced, chewing back fags like spagetti and find one himself!?

Hi Carmo,
Less talk of Dusky, boy: some of us on here (i.e. me) both need that AND failed even to see a Radde's this year as some sort of compensation (but I did see one of those back in 2001).
Now TWENTY Chimney Swifts on Corvo (Azores) today: I want one...MacCurtain St beckons!!!

Peering out from under a hangover so intense it could be classed as a threat to the city...vague memories of a large samoan guy pouring canadian club down our throats.Luckily latched onto a passing German girl before things got weird....I need some more sleep.

Hi Carmo-san,
Cronin managed to see his second Grey-cheeked Thrush of the year today, found by Steve near the North Harbour. Having seen that, it now transpires that the only bird that he need have come off Cape for all autumn (of those that he did see) was the Green Heron!
Dara Fitz found 2 Chimney Swifts on Sherkin late this eve, but unfortunately they were frightened by a Sparrowhawk and appeared to fly towards the mainland. Our only hope is that they roosted somewhere in Baltimore: it was getting late when they flew off, and they had been flying around the church on Sherkin.
Dipped on a nightjar sp seen briefly at Knockadoon earler too, could well have been a Nighthawk!

chimney swifts, yellow-rumped warbler, another grey-cheeked thrush, more raddes warblers...I love Cape Clear, WHY CAN'T I BE THERE FOR JUST THE NEXT FEW DAYS, AAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! AH, I feel so much better now, ye langers. Cronin, fair play fella, delighted living on Cape has paid off for you...you're still a stringy bastard though :)

Hi Carmo,
Cronin was one of the only ones to connect with the Yellow-rumped: none of us lot did. Great views of the Grey-cheeked Thrush and a Grey Phal at South Harbour were some consolation, though.
Wrecked now, will take time to write a proper e-mail during the week.
