Sky Building and Umeda

A pretty easy weekend with no birding (the collective sighs can even be heard over here folks!!) and plenty of sleeping. I hooked up with a few of the lads on Saturday evening for a drink or two and wee bite to eat which was good. I slept well beyond my planned waking time this morning and that was goooddddddd!!!! I needed it. I then met up with a guy who used to work in the firm (he got fired on Thursday) for coffee. Before meeting PK (no, not you PK, another PK) I walked down to the Sky building in Umeda which is a weird building but quite impressive. As I got there I could smell the wonderful aroma of cinammon, mulled wine and pizza. I did not know what to think and so when I rounded the corner I could see the sign informing me that it was a German Christmas visiting Japan...very surreal. What I find amusing is that for a country that does not recognize Christmas, it's celebrated, on a commercial basis anyway, more so than home and PK commented even more so than the US! Crazy people they certainly are, interesting and craze obsessed. So that is it. I'm not in the writing frame of mind so this will be brief. I just leave you with some photos of Umeda and the Sky Building...I hope you enjoy them.

Bye for now

El Carmo

Carmo's diet: today, I've mostly been eating raw horse meat (not bad actually...)

ps: this is what 7 months working in Japan and 2 months without a haircut can do to a person!! I'm using my remote control for the camera to take the shot, it's what's in my right hand, just in case you're curious....

Hi Owen,
Yeah, you might overtake me by 2008, as I can see myself calming down on the auld twitching in time, but otherwise I would hope to stay ahead....
Mark: got the Barrow's meself, and Mandarin for the year, but that was it. Found myself looking at Waxwing and Crossbill up there after having looked at the duck for too long.

Pariah, raw horsie..actually good. They eat raw chicken here so don't be surprised. I've eaten raw ostrich stomach which was suprisingly good. Raw eel on the other hand, is not my cup of tea...

Carmo my old salt,
back in the "civilised" world after 3 unforgettable weeks in Samoa.Spent the last week with a family on this tiny island called Manono - no roads,no cars,no dogs. Its the quietest place on earth. We were talking to this fisherman about surfing ( manono is surrounded by the 2 other islands and gets no swell ) and he was saying he knew a place we could surf.He was eager to show us so we sceptically loaded the boards into his boat and headed off to the uninhabited islet of Nu'Ulopa. All looked flat til we rounded the southern tip and there it was - between 5 and 8 foot of sky blue perfection, rattling along with nobody there to surf it.But us...Had an amazing session, sadly cut short by the fact that we were completely surrounded by shark !! And to make it all the sweeter, the fisherman told us that to his knowledge, nobody had ever surfed it.Finally i have deflowered a wave.Because we are never going to stop telling ths story, there is now a perfect lefthander off a tiny island in the pacific called "Seanachais" (sorry no fadas on the keyboard over here).
Apart from this we spent the days swimmming in waterfalls, walking empty white beaches, spear fishing on coral reefs, drinking coconuts off the trees. The weather was about 35 degrees, the water about 25 (i shit you not),and the weed ..... free !!
Oh yeah i got a new Tattoo !! Local tattoist Tasi spent 3 hours a hammerin into my leg with a combination of pig and sharks teeth. Its a beauty but the pain of the traditional method cannot be denied. Will send you photos asap.

LONG MAY YOU RUN,
Pee
